Leatherman tools came about as Tim Leatherman, founder of Leatherman Tools, traveled abroad. Leatherman traveled abroad in a 1969 Fiat. During their travels it was discovered that the car was cranky and had leaky pipes. Leatherman conceived of the idea of a pocket survival tool. He worked in the basement of his home to create this tool. He wanted a tool with full size pliers with a pocket knife. Leatherman created the multipurpose tool calling it Mr. Crunch to which he received a patent for this.
Sales grew and Leatherman introduced another tool. This one has more features with all locking blades. Then Leatherman decides to go small. The ultra tiny micra becomes and remains the category's top seller.
